Lilliputian Land: Never Built Disneyland

Never Built Disneyland

Storybook Land Canal Boats Disneyland

Disneyland opened as the first modern theme park, and its many opening day lands have each become iconic, being recreated multiple times around the world. But there is one land that was planned throughout much of the development of Disneyland that ended up never opening in the park. That land was Lilliputian Land.

This land would have been inspired by the classic Gulliver's Travels story and have featured one major attraction. The attraction would have taken you on a journey through a miniature country populated with buildings and people that attempted to look like a functioning society.

The land was set to be located in the space between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland in roughly the location currently occupied by the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Fantasyland and Tomorrowland were both much smaller in their initial forms and did not connect to one another, leaving ample room for an additional land in between them.

This land would end up being canceled, but the ideas behind it would eventually end up being incorporated into a classic Disneyland attraction that is still open to this day.

The Storybook Land Canal Boats ended up becoming a spiritual successor of sorts to this concept, only recreating Disney scenes as opposed to a more vague country setting.

The land that was set to hold Lilliputian Land ended up empty upon the opening of Disneyland, only holding a massive mound of dirt left over from the construction of Disneyland. Its absence allowed for later attractions from the Matterhorn Bobsleds to Pixie Hollow to be built in its place. It never got the chance to become iconic as its proposed neighbors Fantasyland and Tomorrowland did, and remains mostly forgotten in Disney history.
