The Imagination Institute today is best known to Disney fans as the home of the Journey Into Imagination With Figment, but it has a more extensive backstory that incorporates multiple Disney Parks, attractions, and films.

The Imagination Institute was originally created for the Honey I Shrunk The Audience attraction that opened up at various Disney Parks in the 1990s. Based on the Honey I Shrunk franchise, this attraction was an original story that showed inventor Wayne Szalinski receiving the institute's Inventor of the Year Award.

This show also featured the first appearance of Dr. Nigel Channing, who would later become the main character of both Journey Into Your Imagination and Journey Into Imagination With Figment, which expanded the Imagination Institute theme to all of the Imagination Pavilion. This was then set as the main location of the Imagination Institute, with various other versions of the attraction being themed as regional locations.

The Imagination Institute has existed for at least a century, as the backstory includes the likes of Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and more being included within its lore as former recipients of the institute's flagship award.

Several live-action Disney characters were also made a part of this institute, incorporating films from Flubber to the films of the Medfield College universe.

The Imagination Institute has had the majority of its branches close down, as Honey I Shrunk The Audience gradually faded from the parks, but its main location still remains open to this day, haunted by Figment who continually terrorizes Nigel Channing.

The backstory of this organization remains one of the strangest in any of the Disney Parks, incorporating long-forgotten films, and Disney attractions for various attractions featuring a set of original and film characters.
