Disneyland has had many never built lands, but few were as extensive, and came so close to being built as Discovery Bay. We are exploring every attraction from this never built section of the original Disney Park, and today we are looking at the never built Fireworks Factory from the land.
This attraction would have been a modern reincarnation of the classic Disney shooting gallery attraction, but with a fantasy style twist.
Instead of being a more traditional shooting attraction with guns at targets, this would take place inside a Fireworks Factory, with special effects and things flying everywhere. Some reports even state that this attraction even developed into a ride through shooting gallery at one point, similar in style to what would eventually become Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.
This attraction would not end up getting built, but there are a few things throughout the Disneyland Resort that are reported to be references to this never built part of Discovery Bay, specifically in reguards to the character Laod Bang, who appeared around this time in Frontierland.
The attraction was supposed to be set in a Chinese fireworks factory, a reference to the Chinatown of San Fransisco that Discovey Bay was partially based on, and this character may be connected to it.
There is a sign in Frontierland referencing Laod Bhang that also shows the factory was established in 1845, timing that matches up with the backstory of Discovery Bay.
The character is also referenced in a shop name in Disney California Adventure, in a fireworks themed pin stand.
Thanks for exploring this never built attraction with us. Be sure to check out the rest of Never Built Disneyland so far here, and come back next week when we explore the never built Professor Marvel attraction from Discovery Bay.
