Why Disney World Should Delay Tron Lightcycle Run To 2022

Tron Lightcycle Run was supposed to be the headliner attraction for the Magic Kingdom's 50th-anniversary celebration, but following delays from the pandemic it is looking like Disney World may be delaying the attraction even more, potentially not opening it until 2022.

This really could end up being the right move long term for a lot of reasons that we are going to go into.

In the next year, the broader Orlando area is going to see two other major roller coasters, both of which are likely to be better than Tron. The Tron roller coaster is a clone, so we already know everything about it, and as a roller coaster, it is somewhat tame, with minimal, Hyperspace Mountain like theming.

There is a decent chance that if people are comparing the three coasters, Iron Gwazi, Velocicoaster, and Tron, Disney might not come out on top. The ride is certainly more similar to Velocicoaster, but that ride is going to be tenser and may have more theming, although we do not fully know.

Regardless of which of these coasters will be the most popular, Disney may not want to compete with two other formidable coasters opening at about the same time.

Disney, if they opened the coaster in 2022 could open one of the only major attractions in the Orlando area that year, as a result of COVID19 related delays of other projects, and there really is no other roller coaster set to open in the area that year.

Disney World also has some new rides they could use for the 50th-anniversary celebration. Remy's Ratatouille Adventure is set to open in 2021, alongside Harmonious (assuming fireworks shows can return at some point in 2021). This could allow Epcot to be the center of Walt Disney World anniversary celebrations, especially when you consider that the popularity is probably going to be stronger for the Ratatouille attraction than Disney anticipated.

Also, we can't underestimate the continual impact of the pandemic. Attendance isn't going to be able to reach the levels Disney wants until the second half of the year at the earliest, and with economic problems that came with the pandemic, waiting to open a major ride could help Disney get more of an attendance boost from it.

There are a lot of reasons to delay Tron, and unfortunately, this means we are probably going to have to wait a bit longer to ride this attraction in Walt Disney World.
