We have all been wondering how Disney Plus would follow up on the success of Hamilton on the streaming service and it appears we may have an answer. Disney Plus is adapting the Broadway musical Once On This Island into an original film for the service.
For those unfamiliar with the show, it is a musical about traditional folk tales on the French Antilles, focusing in on the ethnic conflict between the people who live on the island in a post-colonial period. It specifically focuses on the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who is sent on an adventure by the gods to settle a dispute among them, is death stronger than love.
It originally premiered in 1990 before becoming popular with schools and other amateur productions, leading to a highly successful and Tony Award-winning revival in 2017. It notably stared Hailey Kilgore as Ti Moune, Alex Newell of Glee fame as Asaka and Disney Legend Lea Salonga as Erzulie.
Attached to this project to write the book are Jocelyn Bioh and Wanuri Kahiu to direct with Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.
