This film is adapted from the Broadway without changing much. Few major songs are taken out, and the plot is left entirely intact with a few elements shifted in order to flow better in the new medium.

It features a stellar cast of actors from stage and screen back in the day, led by Barbra Streisand as Dolly Levi and also notably including Michael Crawford who would later originate the Phantom in Andrew Llyod Webber's Phantom of the Opera.

The film follows Dolly Levi, a widow turned matchmaker as she attempts to marry Horace Vandergelder herself amid a series of adventures. It also follows the parallel romance of Cornelius and Barnaby with Irene and Minnie, which comes into conflict with Dolly, as well as the marriage proposal of Vandergelder's daughter.

Disney fans will recognize a large portion of the musical numbers from this classic musical. The Pixar film WALL-E features multiple scenes from the film as well as showcasing the songs Put On Your Sunday Clothes and It Only Takes a Moment. On top of this, songs from the film have been incorporated into the background loop of Main Street USA for decades.

The score remains as one of the most recognizable in classic musical theater and the film features some of the best to ever perform it.

The musical numbers are some of the most lavish ever produced for a film musical, and in some cases it can even feel a bit overdone. But they exude with classic Hollywood musical flare, as can be expected from director Gene Kelly.

If you are looking for a classic movie musical, and one that has made itself a part of the Disney songbook despite not having been originally made by Disney, check out Hello Dolly. It remains a classic musical as relevant as ever.
