Review: The Mandalorian Season 1 Episode 6: The Prisoner

Star Wars The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian is now in its final few episodes of the first season but has consistently kept up its quality even with the wildly different episode formats each week.

That happens again with this, the sixth episode of the first season, The Prisoner. Here we see Mando join up with some other bounty hunters separate from the guild to carry out another mission in return for repairing his ship, still damaged from the last episode.

As always this review will contain spoiler and spoiler-free sections, starting with a spoiler-free section.

This prison break format scales down the production from the grand scale of the last few episodes while keeping the same quality.

There are still a few exciting action scenes in the limited locations and get introduced briefly to a lot of new characters, some with an interesting past with Mando that we don't get to hear much about.

We also get introduced to more of the practical skills of Mando as opposed to his fighting power, leading to one of the most thrilling scenes in the series yet.

Finally, there are plenty of future meme worth Baby Yoda scenes in this episode.

Spoiler Warning

While we don't learn much of Mando's past in this episode we do hear about his past before the guild, as well as a possible previous romantic partner he had.

The scaled-down setting really gives Mando an opportunity to show off his skills beyond fighting, utilizing the prison ship against his former partners in crime.

We don't even get to see most of the kills in this section but that is not the point (and they don't even end up dead. They are filmed brilliantly in an almost Alien style way that makes up for the lack of special effects and more.

Towards the end of the episode, we get our first, albeit brief look at the early New Republic, classic X-Wings and all.

As this show is nearing the end of the first season I am beginning to wonder where the series is going, as apart from The Child and the state of repair of Mando's ship there haven't been many ongoing plot threads to wrap up in a finale. There is still time however to build to an epic conclusion to a first season that met expectations for the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV show.

What did you think of the episode? Any predictions for how the first season will end? Let us know in the comments!
