What Is the Darksaber? Mandalorian Season 1 Cliffhanger Explained

Moff Gideon with the Darksaber on a Tie Fighter Star Wars The Mandalorian

The season finale of The Mandalorian gave us a curveball, introducing to the live-action Star Wars universe a concept only seen in the extended universe and the Star Wars The Clone Wars animated series.

I am talking of course, about the shocking introduction of the Darksaber into The Mandalorian.

So here we are going to discuss, what the Darksaber is, its brief history in Star Wars lore, and what its introduction means for season 2 of The Mandalorian.

So the Darksaber was created by the first-ever Mandalorian member of the Jedi Order, Tera Vizsla about a thousand years before the prequel trilogy, and was then kept by the Jedi Order for a period of time before being stolen and then passed down by the Mandalorians generationally.

The weapon was first introduced to the mainstream Star Wars universe when it was used by Mandalorian Death Watch member Pre Vizsla during the Clone Wars.

Since then the weapon has been used by a variety of masters both Mandalorian and not Mandalorian. Some notable highlights include Darth Maul and Sabine Wren.

Most recently it was seen being used by Mandalorian leader Bo-Katan Kryze in the early rebellion against the Empire before the events of A New Hope.

Some important things to know about the weapon. It was created like a traditional lightsaber, crystal and all. As far as we know at the moment only one was ever made, meaning this is the same weapon used by Darth Maul and Sabine Wren.

This blade also has some unique characteristics, with the blade taking on the emotional state of its owner and having a few unique abilities.

A final important thing to know about the weapon is it often transfers ownership through combat.

So now that we have explains what it is and a brief look at what we know about its history in the Star Wars universe, the question remains of what will this mean for season two.

It probably means we will be seeing a lot more of Moff Gideon in the coming season, possibly leading to a showdown that could lead to the title Mandalorian receiving the ancestral weapon of his clan.

The introduction of the Darksaber was definitely a curveball that leaves questions not only for what will happen in The Mandalorian's second season but also what happened to put Moff Gideon in possession of the weapon. All questions we will await the answers to in season two of Disney+'s breakout hit Star Wars series.
