Bald Mountain: Never Built Magic Kingdom

Never Built Magic Kingdom

The Magic Kingdom mountain range is one of the most iconic parts of Walt Disney World, and in the 1990s Disney considered expanding it with not one, but two different mountains. One, was Adventureland's Fire Mountain, and the other would have been Bald Mountain.

Bald Mountain, named after the location from the Fantasia short featuring Chernabog.

While the final details on the attraction were never developed, the basic idea was a collection of villains gathering in the underworld, in this case, inspired by the version presented in Disney's Hercules, including Hades, Chernabog, and potentially even more Disney villains. This ride was to not be primarily based on any one film, but exist as a mashup of the various evildoers of Disney films old and new.

The plan was for this mountain to be added to Fantasyland in roughly the location of the then recently closed 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride as an expansion of Fantasyland, providing a new visual centerpiece for the land, although it is unclear if it would have been a singular addition or as part of a larger mini-land.

While the exact reasons for the cancelation of this attraction are unknown, its development ended around the time of 9/11, so it easily could have been one of many attractions canceled in the aftermath of that tragedy and its impacts on the tourism industry.

Disney to this day has no mountain in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom, and no ride in any of their parks based on the Disney villains.
