The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to release its next film soon, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, an origin story for a new hero. But despite being about a new character to the series, this film has numerous connections to preexisting films and characters. It may seem a daunting task to catch up on the series at this point to enjoy this movie.
So I am going to try to make it a little easier. I am going to limit it down to the top five films that you should watch before Shang-Chi based on what we already know about the film, to hopefully help you better understand the film without needing to view every single Marvel film.
Avengers Endgame
This film entirely reestablished the dynamics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In order to watch any current film, you really need at least a basic knowledge of this movie.
The Incredible Hulk
For really the first time, The Incredible Hulk is going to have a significant impact on another MCU project. A character besides Hulk, Abomination, is set to appear in the film. As this film is so old, and relatively unreferenced in other Marvel films, it is necessary to watch this movie to understand the backstory of this character.
Iron Man 3
This film introduces the concept of The Mandarin, although it is not the same character that will be featured in Shang-Chi. But it is likely a good idea to have a basic understanding of the character as he is known at the moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before watching this version of the character.
Black Widow
One of the Black Widows from this movie is set to make a subsequent appearance in this film. This movie provided a lot of backstory to this little-understood part of the MCU, and it is also the immediately previous film in the series so it is probably a good idea to make an effort to watch it before checking out Shang-Chi.
Doctor Strange
The character of Wong from Doctor Strange is set to reappear in this film. To be sure that you fully understand his backstory, it would be a good idea to watch his original film. He is a character who may have a big future ahead of him so this will allow you to see his story from the beginning.
