Splash Mountain, it has just been announced is going to be replaced at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom by a Princess and the Frog themed dark ride.
The concept art makes it appear much of the infrastructure from Splash Mountain will be reused in the new attraction, including the same basic facade and ride vehicles, leaving open the question of how much will be reused on the inside.
This ride has been subject to controversy recently so the announcement does not come as a surprise, although this retheming has been in the works for a while. Rumors started growing about a year ago of a retheme, and the announcement was likely just sped up to meet with the current sociopolitical moment.
It will be disappointing to lose a ride as impressive as Splash Mountain from an artistic standpoint, but its connection to Song of the South was always going to be problematic, no matter how Disney attempted to update it for a modern audience.
Princess and the Frog should serve as great inspiration for a dark ride, and I personally can't wait to see how they do it.
We are still waiting the hear the future of the Tokyo Disneyland version of Splash Mountain.
