Legoland New York Vs Coney Island: Which Park is Better?

Legoland New York Theme Park Entrance Sign

Legoland New York and the amusement parks at Coney Island are two locations in the southeastern part of New York state home to many great roller coasters and rides that are amazing to experience. But how do these two locations stack up against each other?

Today I will be comparing the brand new Legoland New York theme park in Goshen New York with the classic amusement parks (Luna Park and Deno's Wonder Wheel) at Coney Island in Brooklyn New York. This comparison will be split up into sections, including theming, roller coasters, other attractions, and entertainment.

This isn't necessarily going to be pointing out which park is better, as they are very different, instead merely exploring what each park does better, and worse.

Theming

In terms of themes, there is an easy winner, and it is Legoland New York.

While the parks at Coney Island have a classic boardwalk feel to them, there is really no theming to them outside of a few individual attractions.

Legoland New York on the other hand prioritizes theming, with every ride based on classic LEGO sets and characters. On top of incredibly themed attractions, all of the restaurants and shops feature intense theming. It also features Miniland, an elaborate land of LEGO models of famous world locations, which just puts the theming of this park completely over the top.

Roller Coasters

Just as Legoland easily had the best theming, Coney Island easily has the best roller coasters.

This is really what Coney Island tries to do, fit in as many roller coasters as possible in a small area. While not every roller coaster is good, and there are even several bad coasters, this park has far more roller coasters and several great ones. The standout coasters are the classic Cyclone coaster, the new for 2021 Phoenix roller coaster, and Steeplechase.

Legoland does have one good coaster in the Dragon themed roller coaster, which is perfect for families, but it is the only non-kiddie coaster in the park.

Other Attractions

While Coney Island mainly focuses on roller coasters, it is in the other attractions that Legoland New York really gets to shine.

First of all, the park features two world-class dark rides in Lego Ninjago The Ride, and the original ride of the park Lego Factory Adventure. Both are incredible rides that are some of the best in the park. On top of these, they have an amazing pirate-themed boat ride, a 4D movie, and many more great rides.

This is not to say that Coney Island does not have great rides. The Wonder Wheel alone is an icon and a must-do at the park.

Luna Park though really has some amazing attractions. Since it is owned by ride manufacturer Zamperla, it has basically become a testing ground for new attractions that then end up in parks around the world. It is a great place to see new and upcoming attractions, and hopefully, the new rides keep coming.

The parks both have amazing collections of rides, and are relatively equal in this category.

Entertainment

Both parks feature limited amounts of entertainment as of the 2021 season.

Legoland primarily features one show, a fire fighter-themed stunt show. This show is meant for very young children and really isn't enjoyable for anyone other than young children.

Coney Island does feature some major entertainment including fireworks, although not every day. If you visit on a day when these are happening then the choice is clear, but it is not a constant part of Coney Island.

It is worth mentioning that Legoland New York has intentions to improve its entertainment offerings with new shows in the 2022 season, although their quality is yet to be known.

Final Thoughts

Both of these parks are great, but they are designed for very different people. If you love thrills above all else, Coney Island is for you. If you want the whole themed package, or a more family-friendly experience, Legoland New York could be the park for you.
