What To Do If Your Broadway Performance Is Canceled

Broadway this past week has suffered a number of cancelations due to COVID19 outbreaks within the cast, affecting shows including Hamilton, Jagged Little Pill, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and more. This is an unfortunate reality of running live theater shows at the current moment but there is a plan in place for dealing with this.

So what do you do if this affects your performance?

Refunds

If your show is canceled you will almost certainly be offered a refund for your ticket in almost every case. This would be dealt with through whatever ticket provider you purchased a ticket from, and it may take a few days to officially go through. In most instances going to the theater is not required. Simply follow whatever instructions are given in the email the show sends you, if there are any.

Finding Tickets To A New Show

If you are already in the city and your show is canceled, you may be stuck trying to find last-minute tickets to a show. There are several good options to get last-minute tickets to a show, often at a discount, which can allow you to still see something if your originally planned show gets canceled.

Here is a quick rundown of some of the best ways to get a last-minute ticket to a Broadway show.

TKTS

The TKTS booth, located underneath the red stairs in the center of Times Square, offers same-day tickets to Broadway shows at a discount that can often be as much as 50% off. The shows offered changes on a daily basis, but going here you will typically have options on what to see. While you will often not know your exact seats, the people working at the shop will usually be able to give you recommendations based on your view. This is probably your best bet if you are dealing with a last-minute cancelation, as you are almost guaranteed to get tickets to something.

Lotteries and Rush

If your show has announced a cancelation a day or more in advance, then lotteries and rush tickets can be a great way to get a last-minute ticket to a show. Lotteries allow you to enter an online game of chance, and if you win you get to purchase cheap tickets to the next day's performance. Rush is a system where the first people to purchase tickets of the day at a given time, either in person or online depending on the show, get cheap tickets to the show. Both require some planning and are not guaranteed, but give you a chance at last-minute tickets. This is a good first option if you know about a cancelation well in advance, as failing still leaves you with the ability to try the other options listed here. Each show has its own unique policies which you can find on their websites.

Box Office

If you go to the box office of a show, they often have leftover tickets just before the show starts. Even sold-out shows can have new tickets available due to cancelations. Also, some shows that offer it may even still have rush tickets still available upon request later in the day. This is by no means a guarantee, but always worth checking in on.
