Whenever a construction wall goes up in the Disney Parks it is filled with quotes from Walt Disney about the Disney Parks. Disney also regularly uses his quotes to defend controversial changes to classic attractions. But more often than not these quotes are taken out of context to change their original meaning. Or rarely, they weren't even said by Walt at all.
We are going to look at how Disney misuses quotes by Walt Disney.
The first misused Walt Disney quote we are going to talk about is the "Disneyland will never be completed" and it has since become Disney's excuse for everything from Frozen Ever After to Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout.
But it was actually said about Tomorrowland on opening day. Tomorrowland in Disneyland was incomplete on opening day, having been subject to the budget cuts Disneyland faced close to opening day, and it ended up not being finished to Walt's liking. He then said this famous quote in the defense of the incomplete land, signaling its eventual redesign that would come in 1967.
This was in literal reference to a land that actually wasn't finished. But because of its vagueness, it has become the go-to excuse.
The other quote we are going to talk about is one that is commonly attributed to Walt Disney but is actually not from Disney at all.
"If we can dream it we can do it"
This quote is commonly associated with Walt Disney but it was actually written well over a decade after his death in the development of an attraction for Epcot. It was written as part of the lyrics for the song New Horizons, the theme song for lost attraction Horizons. Disney seems to have forgotten this fact though and associates it with Walt himself, not one of the creations of his parks.
So the next time you see a Walt Disney quote on a construction wall think twice about what it means. Disney will use them to mean whatever they want them to mean.
