Lost Carousel: Disney's Animal Kingdom's Cancelled Attractions Part 11

Carousel Concept Art Disney's Animal Kingdom

Disney's Animal Kingdom opened without any flat rides. No carousels. No teacups. No Dumbos. Nothing. But this wasn't always the intention.

Welcome to Disney's Animal Kingdom's Cancelled Attractions, where we discuss never built rides from the forth park at Walt Disney World. To check out any other entries in this series, head here. Today we are discussing the lost carousel of Disney's Animal Kingdom.

This carousel was meant as a real centerpiece for the park. Possibly even in place of the Tree of Life.

As you can see in the concept art for the attraction, you can see many of the other proposed lands and attractions from the park's early days, including Beastly Kingdom, hinting at its central location.

But don't worry, this is Disney's Animal Kingdom, so there is, of course, symbolism worked into the ride. The carousel would have had three levels and they would be themed to three different levels of wildlife. The earth, sea, and sky.

This would have made the icon something special and unique in all Disney Parks, although who knows how it would have turned out in practice. Even in its best possible form, I do not think it would have been anywhere near as visually stunning as the Tree of Life that was built in its place ended up being.

But what do you think? Would you have liked to see the carousel worked into the plans for the final version of Disney's Animal Kingdom somehow? Let us know in the comments below. Be sure to come back next week for the next part of the series, The Dragon's Lair.
