Mickey’s Not So Scary Spooktacular Review

This year’s Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party saw HalloWishes replaced (Despite it still being advertised on the Disney World Bus System) with an all-new fireworks show. This show was themed around Jack Skellington and Zero haunting Mickey and Friends as they traveled through a haunted house. So was it any good and how did it compare to HalloWishes?

Now full disclosure, HalloWishes was my favorite version of Wishes, and despite it definitely being outdated with its lack of projections there is no question that it was a significantly better fireworks show than Mickey’s Not So Spooky Spectacular.

The fireworks show was boring and strange. There is not a lot of pyrotechnics in the show, and what there is all lit off at once a few time throughout the show, not consistently throughout the show. The story does not make a lot of sense and the music choices are just weird. The strangest moment is when waltzing ghosts take over the castle. This is such a natural Haunted Mansion moment, yet the music is a medley of Disney Princess music. In fact, there is no mention of Haunted Mansion at all which is a huge mistake on its own.

On the positive side, the Jack Skellington puppet is amazing and a welcome addition to the party, and personally I hope we see more similar additions of physical props to fireworks shows as it was really interesting to watch.

The finale was also really great, set to This is Halloween which was one of the best sections of a Halloween fireworks show Disney has ever made.

Really my main problem with this is it felt like a secondary offering, not a headlining show. It felt more on the level of Once Upon a Time than Happily Ever After, albeit with more fireworks than that show.

Should you still see it? I would say yes. It is still a quality show and there are some great moments (mainly whenever the puppet is onstage) but if you miss it it is not as big of a deal as missing HalloWishes would have been. It is a good show, but not a standout and I would place every other current Disney World nighttime spectacular above it. Even Rivers of Light. If you want to skip it to get other things done, do it. It is good, not great.
