The Mary Poppins Ride: Epcot's Canceled Attractions

Epcot's Canceled Attractions

Epcot has a long history of canceled attractions that we have chronicled in our Epcot's Canceled Attractions series, and the vast majority of these are from decades ago, long before announcements were made in the public and major fashion they are today. But there is actually a very recently canceled Epcot ride that was announced with concept art and even given a preview film at Epcot.

That ride is, of course, the never-built Epcot Mary Poppins ride.

This ride was announced as a part of the massive overhaul currently happening at Epcot in Walt Disney World, alongside numerous other attractions including Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Rewind.

The ride would have been built in the back section of the United Kingdom Pavilion in the World Showcase, near where the current garden section is. The ride's building would have been a recreation of the houses on Chery Tree Lane, which would have been a natural fit given the preexisting pavilion was a showcase of UK architecture throughout the ages.

What this ride was supposed to be was never announced. Rumors said it wasn't going to be a dark ride, but some kind of flat ride, potentially a highly themed indoor carousel, although this was far from the only potential theory.

This ride was set to be one of the later additons to Epcot in terms of the timeline of the redo, and that would ultimately end up being its downfall. Work had yet to begin on the attraction when Walt Disney World closed in 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic.

During the closure, Disney would pause progress on most construction, and make changes to their plans in several different theme parks around the world. One of these changes was that the Mary Poppins ride was removed from the plans for Epcot.

Disney would not formally announce the cancelation, but they rarely do when major projects are canceled. All references to the attraction that could be removed from the parks or the internet were removed without a trace.

This is one in a line of never built Mary Poppins attractions, and one of the numerous rides proposed for Epcot, that never ended up being built.
