The first full Broadway season following the shutdown is now complete, and there are plenty of new shows open this summer to see on a trip to New York City's theatre district that have opened for the first time since September 2021.

Here are 10 of the best newer productions playing on Broadway this summer to help you plan your theatre-going experience. They are presented in no particular order.

1. Six The Musical

Six has been the smash hit of the last Broadway season. One of the first new productions to open since the shutdown, Six tells the stories of the wives of King Henry VIII in the form of a pop concert, with each queen competing to see who had the worst experience. It is a fun one-act experience that is one of the most popular shows currently on Broadway.

2. POTUS

POTUS is a new Broadway play featuring a cast of comedic female actors from stage and screen, including Vanessa Williams, Rachel Dratch, Jullian Hough, Julie White, and more. The plot revolves around the women behind an idiotic male president, who are desperately trying to cover up an ongoing series of scandals, as well as a journalist trying to find her next big story in the White House.

This is a fast-paced and star-studded play that is only running through August 14th.

3. A Strange Loop

A Strange Loop is the most Tony Award-nominated show of the year, and a frontrunner for many of the awards. Having been one of only 10 musicals to ever win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this is a critically acclaimed musical. Following a Gay Black playwright named Usher who works as an Usher at The Lion King, this show explores art, identity, and the various communities that Usher is a part of. A Strange Loop is likely to win big at the Tonys this year, and it is certainly a show to see this summer.

4. Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is back on Broadway with almost the entire pre-shutdown principal cast returning to the show, including Alex Brightman. This is a wonderful adaptation of the classic film with plenty of on-stage magic and an incredible cast. This musical has gone viral online for a reason, and it is one of the most fun shows currently on Broadway.

5. Company

Company Broadway Musical Revival Marquee at Night

The current Broadway revival of Company is the last production of his own work that Stephen Sondheim worked on for Broadway, and it is an incredible production, reimagining one of his classic musicals for today's world. Featuring multiple gender-swapped characters, including main character Bobbie (Bobby in the original) this show is a comedic outlook on modern relationships and marriage. Featuring an incredible cast, with three Tony Award-nominated performers including theatre legend Patti LuPone, this is a once-in-a-lifetime production.

6. The Music Man

The Music Man is a classic musical now back on Broadway, headlined by Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, each giving Tony Award-nominated performances. This production is classic Broadway, big dance numbers, strong singing, and a simple plot all held together by an incredibly strong cast. If you can afford tickets (which run over $200 for even the cheap seats) this show should be fun for the whole family.

7. Into The Woods

Into The Woods is a new Broadway production of one of Stephen Sondheim's most well-known shows, transferring from a sold-out two-week run this spring at New York City Center. Featuring an incredible cast of theatre performers headlined by Sara Bareilles in one of the lead roles, joined by a cast that includes Brian Darcy James, Gavin Creel, Patina Miller, and more. Running for only 8 weeks this summer from June 28th to August 21st, this is likely to be one of the hottest tickets of the summer. You will not get another chance at this production.

8. MJ

MJ The Musical Broadway Show Poster Ad

MJ The Musical has been one of the biggest commercial hits of the season. This new jukebox musical about pop star Michael Jackson follows one moment in his life, the preparation for his Dangerous tour, offering a look at his career up to that point. It is a crowd pleasing concert like experience that features most of the hits from his entire career.

9. Mr. Saturday Night

Mr. Saturday is a new musical based on the film of the same name, even including some of the same cast from the film, most notably star Billy Crystal. With music by seasoned Broadway composer Jason Robert Brown, the man behind other classic musicals like Parade, 13, and The Last Five Years, this is a fun musical comedy featuring all star talent.

10. Paradise Square

Paradise Square is a new musical currently running on Broadway. Featuring a fictional storyline set alongside real world events, this musical focuses on Irish immigrants and free Black Americans living together in a shared community during the American Civil War in New York City. This is a dance heavvy show, showcasing the different styles of dance and music from both communities, held together by Joaquina Kalukango giving one of the strongest performances on Broadway this season, with an 11 oclock number Let It Burn that causes nightly mid show standing ovations.
