1. A Strange Loop
A Strange Loop is a Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, something only 9 other shows in history can claim, joining timeless classics like Rent, A Chorus Line, and Hamilton which also won this award. It is also the most nominated show of the year, and almost certainly the most likely contender to win the top award, Best Musical.
This show is about a Black Gay playwright dealing with his identity and living in New York City as he writes a musical.
2. Company
Company is the last Broadway production of a Stephen Sondheim show ever worked on by the composer himself, and it features a star-studded cast featuring three current Tony Award Nominees, including theatre legend Patti LuPone. This revival swaps the gender of several characters, including the main character Bobbie in an imaginative and insightful reimagining of this musical theatre classic. This is a historic production and cast that is not to be missed.
3. Paradise Square
Paradise Square is a new musical set during the Civil War in New York City. It follows the community at Five Points, a historic neighborhood of free Black Americans as well as Irish immigrants as they react to the Civil War draft. Featuring an incredible ensemble cast led by Tony Award Nominated Joaquina Kalukango, this show features brilliant dancing and a strong original score.
This musical is tied as the second most nominated show of the year, and with incredibly cheap tickets it is a great show to see.
4. Six The Musical
Six The Musical is an international smash hit musical currently playing on Broadway. Telling the story of the six wives of Henry The Eighth, this musical takes the form of a pop concert and has been a hit not only on Broadway, but in the West End, as well as in various other international productions. This one-act musical is a crowd-pleasing delight with a wonderful cast and a strong feminist message.
5. MJ
MJ The Musical is a jukebox musical about Michael Jackson, showcasing a single moment in his life, the rehearsals for the 1992 Sounds Dangerous tour. With a book by two-time Pulitzer-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, this musical has been a smash hit with audiences, being one of the best performing shows financially of the 2021-2022 season.
