The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror California Adventure Hollywood Tower Hotel

California Adventure received a massive update leading up to 2012. It added many attractions to the park to try and fix the attendance problem the park had been struggling with since opening. Only two rides added in this expansion have closed, Luigi's Flying Tires because of its unpopularity and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

Tower of Terror from Mickey's Fun Wheel

The ride was one of the first major expansions to the park and was one of the most prominent buildings in the skyline of the park.

Tower of Terror Hollywoodland Disneyland

It featured a similar but original facade to the same Hollywood Tower Hotel from the Hollywood that never was and always will be.

Hollywood Tower Hotel Disney California Adventure

This was not the popular ride that has become the icon of Disney's Hollywood Studios. It was much smaller than that. The ride had to fit in a smaller area and removed the 5th Dimension scene. This removed the part that tied the ride the to its storyline and replaced it with a mirror.

Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Lobby California Adventure

The lobby of this version was largely the same as in Orlando, only with different Twilight Zone props hidden throughout it.

The ride featured the same preshow as the Orlando version.

Tower of Terror Boiler Room California Adventure

It also featured a bigger more detailed two floor boiler room.

Tower of Terror Service Elevator California Adventure

Now the elevator here did not have the same movement capabilities as the Orlando version, so to make up for it the loading station was on two levels, which also made up for the fact that here the entire ride took place in one elevator shaft. There was also a hallway between the boiler room and the entrance to the elevator to allow guests to exit.

The main reason this version was not as good as the Disney World original was it never got a randomized drop sequence. This made it so the ride was exactly the same every time, removing a lot of the surprise the Orlando version had.

Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout Exterior

In 2017 it closed to become Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout. This added the randomized drop sequence with 6 different versions of the ride and a Halloween version. It also added impressive Rocket Raccoon animatronics to the preshow.
