Groundhog Day
For the last Theater Thursday before Groundhog Day lets take a look back at Groundhog Day on Broadway.
Groundhog Day the musical was an adaptation of the classic film of the same name into a musical starring Andy Karl as Phil Connors.
The musical mostly followed the plot of the movie while adding in some things to make it longer than the film.
Many classic moments from the film were made into songs, like Phil getting drunk and arrested and his many suicide attempts as well as new moments like delving deeper into the minor character Nancy from the film while also adding new characters like a Groundhog mascot and residents of the town.
The show won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards in the West End but won no Tonys and to the surprise of the production team flopped on Broadway.
I think it's a hidden gem and is great to listen to especially around the time of its namesake holiday. It keeps the spirit of the original movie while adding in music and a few new storylines.
