Happy 60th Anniversary Matterhorn Bobsleds

60 years ago, the first of two staples of Disney Parks opened to the public, changing forever the type of ride that could be at a Disney Park, or any park.

Today is the 60th anniversary of the Matterhorn Bobsleds, the first Disney roller coaster, and the first Disney mountain.

Every Disney Resort has at least one mountain, and they all started here with this Swiss Alps-themed coaster. Partially based on the film Third Man on the Mountain this ride would serve as inspiration for rides from Space Mountain to Expedition Everest. The history of this ride is even regularly showcased in the park during the ride's annual refurbishments.

This ride, with its two dueling tracks and toboggan style vehicles, is still a unique experience to Disneyland. Later additions like Harold and the ice caves only improved the ride experience and keep it relevant for current guests.

The ride has gone through many changes but still remains the first Disney coaster and mountain, and the only one Walt Disney himself rode. Be sure to visit this classic ride on your next visit to the Disneyland Resort.
