Great Musicals Never on Broadway

Great Musicals Never on Broadway

Broadway is obviously the biggest market in the musical theater world of the US. This does not mean the only musicals worth listening to are the ones that made it to Broadway.

Tick Tick Boom

The other major musical written by the future writer of Rent has achieved a lot of well-deserved attention in recent years. It even is getting a film version directed by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda, the composer of Hamilton and In the Heights.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

This is partially based on the Disney film of the same name, but this is not the feel-good kid's film. It is pretty much taking the songs from the Disney film along with new ones by the original composers and putting them in the original story from the novel. This made it much darker and not very kid friendly. While this version has seen some success internationally, the planned Broadway version was canceled with Disney pursuing other musical adaptations of their films including Frozen and Freaky Friday.

Both musicals from the TV show Smash really deserve a Broadway production. Bombshell is a more traditional musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe and there has actually been talk of a Broadway production, but nothing has been made official even after an announcement was made. Hit List, the musical from season 2 is a more modern style musical about the rise and fall of a pop star with music by the composers of both Dear Evan Hansen and Be More Chill.
